New textbook on Qualitative Comparative Analysis using R

Eva Thomann co-authored the textbook “Qualitative Comparative Analysis Using R: A Beginner’s Guide”, which was published in October. The book offers a hands-on and practical introduction to Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) including data sets, examples scripts and template files as well as quizzes and exercises to facilitate the learning process.

The book was written with Ioana-Elena Oana, who developed the SetMethods package for R, and Carsten Q. Schneider, an experienced teacher and practitioner of QCA. Eva Thomann herself has a strong background in set-theoretic methods, in teaching as well as in her work in the advisory board of the COMPASSS network and as a founding member of methodsNET. Together they embarked on a journey of writing a book on QCA with the goal of creating an up-to-date, user-friendly resource that includes all the recent methodological and software-related developments in QCA.

“Easily accessible and loaded with a wealth of examples, this important book by Oana,Schneider and Thomann provides an expert guide to the set-analytic perspective. The integration of concepts and research strategies with the R software package makestheir approach particularly successful. I expect it will quickly become the standardintroduction to QCA.” – Peer C. Fiss, University of Southern California

“Every now and then, a book comes along of which you think ‘Why wasn’t this around when I was learning this stuff?’ Because, sometimes, you just want to learn from the best. The authors have written an excellent guide for both first-time users and experienced QCA scholars: robust, powerful and a must-read.” – Bart Cambré, Antwerp Management School

The book appeared in Cambridge University Press online and in print.
