New Article in Behavior Research Methods

The article "The Rippling Dynamics of Valenced Messages in Naturalistic Youth Chat" co-authored by Seth Frey, Karsten Donnay, Dirk Helbing, Robert Sumner and Maarten Bos performs a quasi-experimental analysis of hundreds of millions of chat room messages between young people. This allowed us to reconstruct how—and on what timeline—the valence of one message affects the valence of subsequent messages by others.

Call for Papers: Conference on Advances in the Empirical and Theoretical Study of Parliaments

The ECPR Standing Group on Parliaments and the University of Konstanz are pleased to announce the conference on Advances in the Empirical and Theoretical Study of Parliaments. The conference will take place in Konstanz, Germany, from 26 to 28 September 2019. Keynote speakers are Kristin Kanthak (University of Pittsburgh), Georg Vanberg (Duke University), and Alan E. Wiseman (Vanderbilt University).

Workshop on High Performance Computing in the Social Sciences

The workshop takes place on July 12, 2019 in room G 309 and is meant for anyone interested in using high performance computing (HPC) resources in their research. It first introduces HPC and the Scientific Compute Cluster (SCC) at the University of Konstanz. The scientific talks in the afternoon then highlight the potential applications of HPC for hardware intensive statistical and simulation tasks in the social sciences.

Presentation at EPSA Annual Conference 2019 in Belfast

Karsten Donnay will contribute to a panel entitled "International and Domestic Conflict" presenting research related to the MERIAM project co-authored with collaborators in Geneva. The conference takes place from June 20 to 22 at Queen's University Belfast.

New Article in Journal of Conflict Resolution

The article "Integrating Conflict Event Data" co-authored by Karsten Donnay, Eric Dunford, Erin McGrath, David Backer and David Cunningham introduces a new automated, transparent and reproducible methodology for the integration of event data sets. The article outlines ways in which the quantitative study of conflict profits from integration, lays the conceptual foundations for the approach, develops the methodology and illustrates it for selected cases.

Vortrag zu Eigenschaften und Ursachen des Populismus

Kommenden Donnerstag (2. Mai 2019) wird Andreas Jungherr im Rahmen des 5. Symposium „Ordnungspolitik für das dritte Jahrtausend“ des Aktionskreis Freiburger Schule und des Walter Eucken Instituts in Freiburg einen Vortrag mit dem Titel "Furcht vor der Freiheit? – Eine politikwissenschaftliche Einordnung des modernen Populismus" halten.

Upcoming presentation at the AK Handlungs- und Entscheidungstheorie

Susumu Shikano will present the paper "A paradox of digital innovation in political participation: Emerging new digital divides" at the upcoming annual meeting of the AK Handlungs- und Entscheidungstheorie, 23.-24. May 2019 at the University of Bremen. The paper is co-authored with Theresa Küntzler (CDM) and Taehee Kim (University of Oldenburg).
