Social and political processes at the local level can play a major role in shaping the outbreak and the dynamics of violence, but can also undergo major transformations after violence has ended. A new special issue project brings together researchers interested in these micro-level dynamics. The aim is to publish a special issue of the Zeitschrift für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung , the leading journal for the German peace and conflict research community. Possible topics are micro dynamics related to the outbreak of civil wars, during civil wars, and after the settlement of civil wars. The contributions study particular actors (state, refugees, rebels, civilians), various activities (violence, peace activism), context factors (resources, local traditions), or consequences for the local population (displacement, development of local institutions). We encourage the submission of papers that empirically test the proposed theoretical models with a compelling qualitative or/and quantitative research design. We are particularly interested in contributions using mixed methods. The special issue depends on approval of the journal based on external reviews of the proposal. If the proposal is accepted, the individual contributions will undergo the journal’s peer-review process. The special issue will be published in English.

This special issue is coordinated by the Methods section of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Friedens- und Konfliktforschung (AFK). To ensure close collaboration and a high-quality special issue, contributors will meet and present their work during the Annual Meeting of the AFK from April 12–14, 2018 in Berlin. At least one author for each contribution should be able to attend this meeting.
