Framing Inequalities

The project deals with the framing of structural and perceived inequalities between groups in the political arena. It aims at developing a new theory of framing and computationally modelling it. Thereby, the semantics and pragmatics of utterances representing group inequalities in political communication are taking into account. This work is based on a text corpus gathered from newspaper and social media discourse on the so-called “European Migration Crisis” between 2014 and 2018. Apart from general framing analyses in this context, we concentrate on specific frames of the deservingness of refugees concerning certain benefits. How is new information integrated into belief systems and how does framing of information affect this integration and political attitudes? Which refugees are perceived to be more deserving than others?
