Research Focus

My research is in normative political theory. My primary research interests concern the place of religion within the liberal state.

I am particularly interested in the following questions:

  • What should be the role of faith-based reasoning in politics? Is it ever legitimate to use religious reasons to justify political decisions?
  • Should liberal states be secular? What kind of separation between religion and politics is necessary in liberal states?
  • How should we accommodate religious diversity? In particular, should religious exemptions be granted?

I am also interested in issues of bioethics (especially issues of human genetic enhancement) and in the question of the epistemic commitments of liberalism.
