Project "EMBRACing changE - Overcoming Blockages and Advancing Democracy in the European Neighbourhood" launched

From 19th to 21st October 2022, the kick-off meeting for the launch of the project "EMBRACing changE - Overcoming Blockages and Advancing Democracy in the European Neighbourhood" took place in Berlin. Under the scientific direction of PD Dr. Sonja Grimm, the research project investigates the blockades of democratization. Together, 14 international partner institutions will develop innovative policy instruments to improve the European Union's capacity to promote democracy. The programme is funded by the European Union for the next three years.

From 19th to 21st October 2022, the kick-off meeting for the launch of the project "EMBRACing changE - Overcoming Blockages and Advancing Democracy in the European Neighbourhood" took place in Berlin. The research project aims to respond to the anti-democratic trends following the colour revolutions and the Arab Spring. It does so through an interdisciplinary, cross-methodological and cross-regional assessment of the obstacles to and drivers of democratisation in 12 case study countries in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, the Western Balkans, North Africa and the Middle East.
Together, 14 international partner institutions will develop innovative policy tools to enhance the European Union's capacity to promote democracy, both from the top - through institution building and working with reform-minded elites - and from the bottom - through engagement with civil society, social movements and popular uprisings. Over the next three years, the consortium will receive €2.8 million in funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe framework programme.
