It is a truism that man-made climate change presents us with major social challenges. However, the fact that these challenges also include the questioning of our moral and ethical self-image has certainly not yet penetrated the general consciousness. Yet the discussion is already teeming with moral terms. There is talk of intergenerational justice, there is the question of individual responsibility towards the climate and the assumption formulated by Robert Habeck that climate protection always means protecting freedom. I will address some of these issues in my lecture. Above all, however, I would like to point out that there is more at stake with global warming than the climate. Our ideas of justice and freedom could also be damaged.
