Matthias Mader is Associate Professor for International Politics at the University of Konstanz (since 2020). Before his position in Konstanz, he was researcher at the Chair for Political Psychology at the University of Mannheim (2014-20) and at the Chair for Political Sociology at the University of Bamberg (2010-14). He received his doctorate degree from the University of Bamberg in 2016, with a dissertation analysing how the information context and core postures toward war and transatlantic cooperation interact in shaping German citizens’ attitudes toward military missions abroad.
In his current research, he collaborates with researchers from nine European countries to examine the dynamic relationship between elites and masses in policy-making about common defence in the multi-level European system. This project (Fighting together, moving apart? European common defence and shared security in an age of Brexit and Trump) is funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung. He has (co-)authored two books and numerous articles on these topics, which have been published in outlets such as the British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Review of Political Economy, and European Journal of Political Research.
