News and Events

Over the last year, we have initialized an alumni talk series in which we invited former SEDS students to share their experiences after SEDS as well as answer all our career questions. We had the pleasure to invite alumni from research as well as industry, working in areas such as consulting, start-ups or data for good. We are hoping to continue this series. So, if you are SEDS alumni and would like to share your experiences after SEDS, please reach out to us!

To strengthen the bonds between and within cohorts, we are organizing various social events. Such events included organizing a running dinner, barbecuing, a bar crawl or a Christmas gathering.

As we aim to improve every student's experience in the SEDS program, we are actively in contact with our fellow students, the administration, and the respective chairs on how our program can be improved.

Orientation Week

The AK SEDS organizes a couple of different social events during the orientation period right before the semester start. Exact details on what, where and how you can take part will follow at the beginning of October.

Python Crash Course

The python crash course is especially aimed at new SEDS students. You will get an introduction to programming with python in order to help you with your studies. Taking the course is highly recommended especially if you do not have (much) experience with python.

You can register for the course via ZEuS starting early October. The exact date will be available soon.

Networking Events "Pathways into Data Science"

This event series is open for any SEDS student that wishes to attend. The main idea behind the event sereis is that our career options as Data Scientists aren’t necessarily as obvious as the career options in other disciplines. Of course we hope our degrees provide us with bountiful options, but in this emerging and growing field it can be difficult to figure out exactly what those options are and in which direction we should go.

Volume 1 - Frie Preu and John Kortner

On Tuesday, May 4th, the first networking event "Pathways into Data Science" took place. Two former graduates of the SEDA/SEDS program shared a little bit about their journey from Uni Konstanz into the working world. Upon graduating from the SEDA program, Frie Preu spent two as a part of an IT consulting firm before moving on to a full time job with Data4Good network CorrelAid. John Kortner also graduated from the program back when it was still SEDA, and went on to spend 3 years working as a Data Scientist at Lufthansa Industry Solutions. John is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Both shared valuable insights and tipps. We thank Frie and John for sharing their knowledge and evening with us and are looking foward meeting more SEDS students in the upcoming "Pathways into Data Science" events!

Volume 2 - Vera Nienaber and Dr. Max Mühlenbock

On June 8th, the second "Pathways to Data Science" event took place. We were incredibly pleased with how many of you joined us for the first event, and were thankful for your attentiveness and curiosity. Events like that are what AK SEDS is all about. We had two new guests joining to share their personal "Pathways to Data Science". Vera Nienaber graduateed from the SEDA program in 2018 and has since been working for the research publisher Springer Nature in Heidelberg. She joined a newly formed Analytics team as a Data Science which is now working on "Data and Analytics solutions" for internal use and external customers. Dr. Max Mühlenbock, our first guest that did not graduate from the SEDS/SEDA program, received his PhD in HR Data Science from the University of Mannheim and has been working at SAP in the People Analytics and Survey Science department since 2019. Here he deals in particular with the creation, management and evaluation of global employee surveys with a focus on team culture, personnel management and health. We thank Vera and Max for sharing their knowledge and evening with us. Again, it was a great opportunity to get insight into how to transition from a data science degree to the real world, from people that have already done it.
