Kommentar:
This course deals with regional and continental integration processes and the questions whether and how they can prevent violent conflicts as well as in case a violent conflict erupts whether and how they are able to solve the conflict and to assist states in the post-conflict reconstruction. The aim is to arrive at a comparative evaluation of different integration processes and their effectiveness in preventing and solving crisis and violent conflicts.
Some guiding questions are: Is the continental or regional organisation able to collectively solve a crisis or a conflict? Which means do they use? What mechanisms have been established to get engaged in crisis solution? Is the regional or continental organisation able to send peacekeeping forces? What resources are at their disposal to get involved in post-conflict reconstruction? What role can they play in securing sustainable peace and security in a post-conflict country?
The topic is approached through a theoretical lens but also by examining several case studies such as the European Union, the African Union, sub-regional organisations in Africa as well as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Mercado Comum do Sul (MERCOSUR).
