BMBF approves VisArgue. In the project "VisArgue. Why and when do arguments win? – An analysis and visualization of political negotiations" at the University of Konstanz, an automated text analytical tool is being developed using methods from political science, linguistics and computer science that will provide new insights into the workings of deliberative political discourse. Under the heading "eHumanities", the project is being funded until 2015 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with a total of 876,000 euros. The idea behind funding "eHumanities" is to support research in the humanities and social sciences with the help of yet to be developed new methods of modern information science. The press release can be found here. DFG supports the Reinhard Koselleck project Traditionale Governance und moderne Staatlichkeit. Traditional social structures, such as indigenous tribal structures, have a decisive influence on the state and its development in many countries. Especially in Africa, traditional forms of collective decision-making, conflict resolution and jurisdiction often assume the tasks of the state. The German Research Foundation (DFG) is supporting systematic research into the effects that the interplay between state and traditional governance has on democracy and internal peace. The DFG has granted an award to the Konstanz political scientist Professor Katharina Holzinger for her Reinhart Koselleck Project: “Traditional Governance and modern Statehood – the Effects of its Integration on Democracy and internal Peace”. The five-year research project at the University of Konstanz is being supported by the DFG with funds amounting to 1.25 million euros plus a programme allowance of 250,000 euros. The press release can be found here. Presentations, impressions and media coverage of the conference „Bürgerbeteiligung bei öffentlichen Großprojekten: Direkte Demokratie und partizipative Verfahren in Deutschland und der Schweiz“ (29.03. - 31.03.2012,Stein am Rhein) can be found here.
